Zulema
Technical Director Role
2021 Year

More than 50 musicians, dancers and actors joined together for a final performance at Millennium Park. Through a spectacular musical journey, young Zulema zig-zags through the culturally diverse landscapes from her Chiapas home in Mexico to Chicago.

I was brought on to be the Technical Director through Jeff Spitz, Founder of Groundswell Educational Films. My experience working with live AV, filmmaking, and animation was being utilized as I wore multiple hats for this performance.

Throughout the show, visuals were projected on a large screen behind the performers. These were queued throughout the performance to emphasize both the physical and emotional journey of Zulema’s travels. I went around Chicago filming neighborhoods and researching archival footage of Mexico. I also added animation during certain emotional scenes. In the end, the 20+ scenes incorporate animation, treated archival and filmed footage, and designed stills.

This 1 hour performance captivated a full audience at Millennium Park. This was my first time collaborating with live performers and theatrical directors. So I attended rehearsals to make sure queuing the scenes was timed correctly. The whole experience was extremely rewarding as my work was being experienced in a live setting - something rare for me!
